The most common call: the opener hums or clicks but the door doesn't move, or it moves an inch and stops. Second most common: the wall button does nothing but the remote still works, or vice versa. That points to a wiring or board fault rather than the motor itself, and it's more likely on a house that's had the same opener since it was built, with wiring that's never been touched.
Third: the light blinks a set number of times and the door won't close, or it closes and immediately reverses. That's the safety sensor circuit, which is often a retrofit on houses from this era, since sensors weren't standard until after many of these garages went up. A misaligned or corroded retrofit sensor is a common failure on exactly this vintage of house.
A unit that runs but sounds labored, especially first thing on a cold morning, is usually a lubrication and belt-tension issue rather than anything electrical.
Some of this is worth checking before you call anyone. Look at the two sensor eyes near the floor on each side of the track - if one is knocked out of alignment or has a cobweb over the lens, the door won't close and the opener will blink an error at you. Clean them and make sure both little LEDs are steady, not blinking.
Check the wall button wiring where it meets the unit; loose low-voltage wire nuts are common on houses that have never had the opener serviced. Swap the remote battery before you assume the board is bad - it's the cheapest possible fix and gets ruled out first for a reason.
What you shouldn't touch: anything involving the torsion spring, the high-tension cable, or the drum at the top of the track. That's not opener work, and on a door this size the spring is under enough force to do real damage. If you open the motor housing and see a burned smell or a scorched board, stop - that's a part swap, not a DIY fix, and forcing the door by hand repeatedly to test it can crack an already-brittle old panel.
